The Clue by the Sea

The afternoon sun turned the sea bright blue as SuperJackie, Gabi, and Max followed a rocky path
along the coast of Cyprus.
Warm air carried the smell of the sea, and waves crashed gently against the cliffs below.
Gabi stopped to look across the water.
“I understand why people have loved this island for thousands of years.”
Max pointed toward the rocks ahead.
“I’d love it even more if we found some shade.”
SuperJackie laughed.
“Come on. There’s something I want to show you.”
The path curved away from the coast and led them toward the remains of an ancient stone
settlement.
Some walls were only knee-high now. Others had almost disappeared into the dry grass.
Max looked around.
“People really lived here?”
“A very long time ago,” SuperJackie said. “Cyprus has been home to people and cultures for
thousands of years.”
Gabi walked carefully between the old stones.
Then something caught the sunlight near her shoe.
“Wait. What’s that?”
Half hidden in the dust was a small piece of pottery.
It was reddish-brown, with a dark curved line painted across one side.
Max immediately reached toward it.
SuperJackie stopped him.
“Look, but don’t pick it up.”
Max pulled his hand back.
“Why? It’s just a broken piece.”
“Maybe. But when something is found at an archaeological site, where it was found can be part of its
story. Moving it can destroy information that archaeologists need.”
Gabi crouched down without touching it.
“So even a tiny broken piece can tell us something?”
“Sometimes a lot.”
They studied the pottery from where they stood.
The curved painted line looked like part of a larger pattern.
“Maybe it belonged to a bowl,” Max said.
“Or a jug,” Gabi suggested.
“We can guess,” SuperJackie said, “but archaeologists look for evidence before deciding.”
They marked the location so it could be reported to the people responsible for the site and continued
along the path.
A little farther ahead, they reached a viewpoint overlooking the sea.
Below them, the water stretched all the way to the horizon.
Several ships were visible in the distance.
Max looked from the ships back toward the ancient ruins.
“Was the sea important to the people who lived here?”
“Very,” SuperJackie said. “Cyprus sits in the eastern Mediterranean. For thousands of years, ships
carried people, ideas, goods, and traditions between different lands.”
Gabi looked thoughtful.
“So this island was connected to lots of different places.”
“Exactly.”
A gust of wind swept across the hill.
Something white fluttered between two stones.
Gabi hurried toward it.
“Another clue!”
She stopped.
It was an old paper napkin.
Max burst out laughing.
“An extremely ancient artifact.”
Gabi picked it up and put it in her backpack to throw away later.
“At least this one we’re allowed to move.”
SuperJackie smiled.
“And that’s another good rule. Leave history where it belongs, but don’t leave your rubbish behind.”
They continued toward the coast as the sun began to sink lower.
Soon the sky turned golden and pink.
The three friends sat on a rock overlooking the Mediterranean.
Max looked back toward the ruins.
“It’s strange.”
“What is?” Gabi asked.
“We came here and saw broken walls and one tiny piece of pottery. But now it feels like there are
thousands of stories under our feet.”
SuperJackie nodded.
“That’s what makes history exciting. The past doesn’t disappear completely. It leaves clues.”
Gabi smiled.
“And we get to discover them.”
“Carefully,” Max added.
“Very carefully,” SuperJackie said.
The waves continued to roll toward the island just as they had for generations before them.
And as the last light of the day disappeared over Cyprus, the three friends knew that one small clue
had opened the door to a much bigger story.

Every day is a chance to be a hero.
