THE NORTH

The Lights in the Frozen Sky

The snow crunched beneath their boots as SuperJackie, Gabi, and Max crossed the frozen
landscape of the North.
Everything around them seemed white and silent. Snow-covered hills stretched into the distance, and
the pale winter sun hovered just above the horizon.
Max pulled his hat farther over his ears.
“I think my nose is turning into an icicle.”
Gabi laughed. “At least we’ll know where to find you if you freeze.”
SuperJackie looked toward the sky.
“Keep moving. We came here to see something special.”
“You still haven’t told us what,” Max said.
“Some discoveries are better when you don’t know exactly when they’re coming.”
They continued across the snow until they reached a small frozen lake.
Gabi stopped beside the shore.
“It’s so quiet here.”
Then a strange sound broke the silence.
Crack.
Max jumped backward.
“What was that?”
Another deep crack echoed across the lake.
SuperJackie held up a paw.
“Nobody goes onto the ice.”
“Is it breaking?” Gabi asked.
“Ice can make sounds when temperatures change,” SuperJackie explained. “But we can’t tell how
safe it is just by looking at it. So we stay on solid ground.”
Max nodded. “Adventure rule number one: don’t become part of the frozen lake.”
“Good rule,” Gabi said.
They followed the shoreline instead.
A little farther ahead, Gabi noticed a set of tracks in the snow.
“More footprints!”
Max crouched beside them.
“These are bigger than the ones we found in the Alps.”
The tracks crossed the snow and disappeared behind a low hill.
This time, SuperJackie shook his head.
“We can look from here, but we’re not following a wild animal.”
They waited quietly.
After a few moments, a reindeer appeared on the ridge.
Its dark antlers stood out against the pale sky.
Gabi’s eyes widened.
“Wow.”
The reindeer paused, looked in their direction, and then slowly continued across the snowy
landscape.
“How does it live out here when it’s this cold?” Max asked.
“Animals in the North have special ways of surviving,” SuperJackie said. “Thick fur helps protect them
from the cold, and reindeer can even find food beneath the snow.”
Max looked down at his boots.
“I can barely find my own feet beneath the snow.”
They all laughed.
The daylight slowly began to fade.
The sky changed from pale blue to deep navy, and the first stars appeared above them.
Gabi looked around.
“Is this what we were waiting for?”
SuperJackie smiled.
“Not yet.”
Then, without warning, a faint green glow appeared across the northern sky.
Max pointed upward.
“What is that?”
The green light grew brighter, stretching like a ribbon above the snowy hills.
Then another appeared.
And another.
Green waves seemed to dance silently among the stars.
Gabi stared upward, speechless.
“The northern lights,” SuperJackie said softly.
“They’re real?” Max whispered.
“Very real. They happen when particles from the Sun interact with gases high in Earth’s atmosphere.”
Max kept staring at the sky.
“So the Sun helped make this?”
“From very far away,” SuperJackie said.
The three friends stood together beneath the glowing sky.
No one spoke for a while.
They didn’t need to.
Finally, Gabi smiled.
“I think this might be the most beautiful thing we’ve ever discovered.”
SuperJackie looked at the green lights dancing above them.
“That’s the wonderful thing about exploring.”
“What?” Max asked.
“There’s always something you haven’t seen yet.”
Far above the frozen North, the lights continued their silent dance.
And somewhere beyond the snowy horizon, another adventure was waiting.

Every day is a chance to be a hero.
